The UK, now more than ever, needs a liberal party to give the electorate a sane alternative to authoritarian excesses from whichever direction they might come. But a liberal party needs to be run by liberals. For far too long Lib Dem governing bodies have prioritised the suppression of speech over robust debate in which ideas are tested and scrutinised. This has resulted in a troubling tendency toward groupthink and policies that are hard to sell to the electorate.

Lib Dem members have the opportunity to change the governance of the party just once every three years. Ballots for a range of Federal Committees will land on Tuesday 25th October. Among those who are standing are experienced, talented candidates campaigning on a platform of free speech, equality and genuine inclusion.

The Thornhill Review noted that “we have become very good at talking to ourselves about the things we like to talk about. This has come at the expense of constantly thinking about what ‘normal’ people care about and building everything we do around trying to help them.”

We believe the people of the UK would support a liberal party that understands their priorities, that is up-front about its policies and treats its members with decency and respect.
